Proposed Welcoming Statement
Many in our denomination and congregation are questioning the statement in the 2016 United Methodist Book of Discipline that homosexuality is "incompatible with Christian teaching." This statement will most likely be called into question at our next General Conference in 2020. Our tradition calls us to use the Wesleyan quadrilateral of experience, tradition, scripture, and reason in decision making. This survey is a request for feedback (not a formal vote). We are asking members of First United Methodist Church West Lafayette to weigh in on whether we should adopt the following welcoming statement, and be listed with the Reconciling Ministries Network of like-minded Methodists who celebrate LGBTQ+ inclusion.
We, the people of First United Methodist Church West Lafayette, welcome everyone, through all life’s stages, with arms that are open, respectful, and loving. And by everyone, we mean regardless of a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity, nationality, race, ability, bank balance, or background. As a Reconciling Congregation, we welcome you into our church family, for it is by joining hands that we support one another and share our faith journey together. Whoever you are, and wherever you are in your spiritual journey, you are welcome here.
Our Next Family Promise Host Week is May 27-June 3
You can sign up to bring in an Evening meal (5:30-6:00pm). You will be informed on how many (usually about 10 people), & what restrictions are needed. Or be an Evening host (5:00-8:30pm) help to serve the meal, clean up afterwards, & keep the families company & help them to feel "at home." Or Overnight hosts (8:30pm-7:00am) are asked to bring their own sheets, blankets, & pillows. Or staff the Day Center for 2 hour slots (7:00am-5:00pm). Thank you for helping with this awesome program. Time and Talent
All members & non-members are asked to consider completing a 5-7 minute Time & Talents Survey online. Our church leadership & staff will coordinate the responses gathered & distribute the results among the ministers, Nominating & Leadership Team & persons in charge of the different areas of ministry. Everyone age 12 & up can fill one out. Mark all of those that you believe reflect your strengths & have an interest in. Please provide your name & email information. Click here for the survey
